FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION
By invitation ONLY!
This is in memory of the inspiring principle of my Triathlon Team whose president passed away recently: the sentence "Failure is not an Option" was popularized in the multisport world by Carlos Moleda, a legendary wheelchair athlete and five-time Ironman World Champion.
Moleda is a Brazilian-born former U.S. Navy SEAL who was paralyzed from the waist down during a firefight in Panama in 1989: when he got into endurance sports and began pioneering the handcycle/wheelchair division in the late 1990s, he brought his Special Operations mindset with him, completing his first Ironman World Championship in Kona with "FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION" emblazoned in massive letters across the carbon disc wheels of his racing wheelchair.
Moleda's sheer dominance, combined with the visual impact of those spinning words over 112 miles of the scorching Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway, turned the phrase into a legitimate, blood-and-sweat "motto" for the global triathlon community, and we felt to keep inspiring our Quad initiative.
Moreover "Failure is not an option" was the motto of an italian triathlon team whose president left this world a few months ago and some of us feels to leave this sign at the foot of Apuan Alps.
Daily Program
In 2026 we are basically training by the lake every day, twice a day, early morning and late evening, with the 19:00 by-the-lake meeting as the focus moment.
Every day we will be running one or more run loops, trying to see where and how we can extended it to reach the 5km mark we need for a full sprint quadrathlon in 2027.
Remember: this year we are not limited by our schedule, we are just finetuing the 2027 ("for a price") program where the the schedules will be mandatory
Expanded over the full week we'll try to keep the following Weekly program:
Weekly Program- AUGUST 2026
Our 8 days program for this year:
But our masterpiece is the Transition Championship : a lightweight and funny event for the Sunday's farewell (considering the Saturday's race and the group replica in the morning)
Transition Championships! T1/T2/T3 competition (simulation)!
Do you believe a good transition can make the difference between a gold and a silver?
We'll, let's prove it with a digital cronograph!
Are these the right distance? Shall we bike 1km after T1 or just 100m as the swim leg? Are we going the fast-triathlon way or are we chooising our own style? Let's find our together!
Swim Course
Platform start from the Camping (now temporarily closed) area: 720m in a straight line to the T1 area.
Yes, this means that you need to reach the area by
swimming in a warm-up attitude.
and Yes, my actual strava track means that
swimming straight is not trivial,
besides we are into a zero-traffic lake
(excluding a few Pedalo's) where wind usually has no effect,
we have two
incoming rivers with cold water, so there is some "current" ... a phenomenon
that can clearly be seen from our WHQ in Castagnola, 100m above the lake.
Bike Course
As for the race-simulation (and 2027 race-candidate) a 10km loop starts from the T1,T2,T3 transition zone, reaches up to the Gorfigliano Hamlet and steps back in a loop as per the picture on the right.
The strava segment named "QuadrathlonBike_IT-LU-Gramolazzo-BikeLoop10k" is the following:
https://www.strava.com/segments/29542523
On the bike days we several options for training, with the main two as below:
Kayak Course
For this year we will just use a simple strategy:
T2 -> back to the swim start -> back to transition area -> T3
For the reace next year: very probably we will be able to
circle a border-lake loop marked by
regata buoys
as per the picture: hover on it for a larger resolution version
Run Course
An about 3km loop from T3 area to the camping and back as per the picture.
This is the Strava RUN Segment titled "QuadrathlonRun_GramolazzoLoop-3.2k" -> https://www.strava.com/segments/29607510
For the 2027 race we have a number of options to extend it to 5k or reduce it to 2.5k and do it twice
For Run days we have a number of options in the area, including lovely in-the-woods trail paths as per the following strava segments:
